According to director and writer Marius van Mooikasteel, in the past the basement of Kevin's house was created in a real room with real stone walls and a flat stone floor.
However, this would mean always carrying the props from the Props A building all the way to the location of filming, doing all the work of creating the basement and filming it, then having to carry everything back again. This would have to be repeated for each shoot of a scene in the basement.
This new movie set area would be in the same Props Department building, saving on a lot of time and work to get the set ready, and then just keeping it set up until a different scene might have to be shot in the same space. The set can then be quickly disassembled since everything just needs to be moved back onto a shelf in the same building, instead of having to be hauled back over to the Props Department some distance away.
The upcoming scenes needed to be shot will mostly consist of closeups of the submarine plan and storybook Kevin finds inamong his grandfather Barend Sweefarend's old things. The shots of Kevin and Majoor have already been filmed on location at the old location.
